Solitary travelling: an initiation path to discover the world.
In many cultures travelling in solitude is part of the initiation path to adult hood. In Germany from the late middle ages up to the beginning of the industrial era apprentices of the different craftsmanship corporations undertook the ritual of the "Wanderjahre": wearing a typical black pointed hat they travelled for years to improve their skills learning from different masters all around the country. It was an obligatory and fundamental step to become masters themselves. This tradition continues in Anglo-Saxon countries where many, after having finished their studies, take a sabbatical year off to travel around. In Japanese fables and cartoons the myth of the wandering samurai is still alive today with a main character in search for "something." There are so many ways to do solitary travel. Here's some:
